Der Steuermann

„Wer schreit dort auf den billigen Plätzen?“
fragt der Steuermann.

Die Opposition ist aufgebracht:

„Was hat er sich dabei gedacht?“
„Wie sollen wir hier funktionieren –
ohne jeden Schritt zu kontrollieren?“

„Das Beste ist, wir lassen’s bleiben.“
„Oder wir strengen uns noch mehr an.“

„Ich höre euch“,
sagt der Steuermann

„Auf Nummer sicher gehen, das wäre gut.
Dann kann uns nichts passieren.“

„Ich höre euch.
Doch ich am Steuer
kann das nicht garantieren.“

„Die Zukunft ist uns ungeheuer!“

„Ich höre euch –
und trotzdem sitze ich am Steuer.“

Der Sturm wird leiser,
das Wasser wird flach.

Ruhe kehrt ein,
und es wird Nacht.

Nur ein tiefes Schnaufen hört man
vom Steuermann:

„Wieder ein Sturm,
den ich bewältigen kann.“

 

The Helmsman

“Who’s shouting from the cheap seats?”
asks the helmsman.

The opposition is upset:

“What was he thinking?”
“How are we supposed to function
without controlling every step?”

“Better turn around.”
“Or try even harder.”

“I hear you,”
says the helmsman.

“We should play it safe.
Then nothing can happen to us.”

“I hear you.
But even I, here at the wheel,
cannot guarantee that.”

“The future is terrifying!”

“I hear you —
and still,
I am the one at the wheel.”

The storm grows quiet,
the waters grow still.

Peace returns
as night settles in.

Only the deep breathing
of the helmsman can be heard.

“Another storm
I know how to steer through.”

Behind the Poem

The Helmsman is a poem about uncertainty, control and inner leadership.

The opposition represents the voices within us that become louder when life feels uncertain.

They question, warn and try to regain control — often with the intention of keeping us safe.

The helmsman does not fight these voices. He listens to them without handing over the wheel.

“I hear you — and still, I am the one at the wheel.”

The storm represents the moments when fear and uncertainty grow stronger.

Being at the wheel does not mean controlling the sea or knowing what will happen next.

It means trusting yourself to navigate whatever comes.

And when the storm eventually passes, the helmsman is reminded of something important:
